Hello everyone,
As soon as I saw that a qoutation had to hilighted, and that the real name of the author, plus the work it comes from also had to be similarly shaded, I just knew this EV was one for the Classicists! Populated the grid quickly, then spent a while staring at it, looking for inspiration. At that stage I was probably a hater of mankind, certainly one who distrusts everyone else!
Weather here is awful, just right for a Tempranillo!

Team Jogler is in agreement with all that has gone before - ie straitforward grid fill (once the obligatory stupid mistake was identified); tricky hunt for the quote and author (resorted to looking at a list of pen names); and the first week for some time that AB has come up with the goods when searching under the ev number (hopefully a good sign that someone has sorted that glitch out). Welcome Mike of the many 1's, in this thread aprons seem to be primarily used when processing gluts of garden produce.... The reticence to give blank answers is not a desire to keep arcane secrets but more to allow people to join in the chat and achieve their own pdm's - but blatency can creep in as the week progresses! Has anyone heard whether the miniest p-g has arrived?
Well, I thought this one was dreadful. A very lengthy but pedestrian grid fill, followed by a search for a randomly inserted quote where the only thematic link is with the puzzle's title? If I wanted a word search, I would have bought a book of word searches! Bah! Bah, I sez! Seems as if this puzzle has me hating, oh, just about everything.

Hello everyone, I seem to have followed the same path as everyone else; reasonably easy grid, then a longer time discovering the quote etc. In the end it was one of those flashes of inspiration - actually the wrong 'work', but the right author - that finally got me there. Well nearly, because I am not happy about 58a and 55d. Yes, I've got them, but I can't justify the definitions from my Chambers 10th Edition, though the cryptic parts more or less work.

I hope the end of fruit processing is in sight! You'll then be able to cast off that fruit spotted apron! My version of the BRB (9th version)justifies 58a, look at the full 5 letter definition rather go to the singular, which you then tried to pluralise! As for 58d, A(ctive),plus what can be defined as an extra in cricket, defined in the BRB as both a 2 and 3 letter word.

Hi Doc HH - Alas no end in sight for the apples. One of the four trees is almost devoid of apples but the others are still laden. I managed to give some more away today and I am in process of building a runner bean trench which I intend to line with some of them. Apron is still well and truly fruit spotted.

Hello again, Light has finally dawned!. Must have been tiredness. I take it all back Doc HH. My problem was a carelessly misplaced 'a' instead of an 'e' in 40d, resulting in wrong answers in both cases. No wonder I couldn't make sense of them. Interestingly what I had together with 'active' is actually a two letter abbreviation meaning 'before the present time' which I had thought referred to 'old'. Thanks again.
