Although I am nowhere near finished, the grid-fill seems fairly straightforward. Despite the very long preamble, I am not expecting any major problems, so please can we try to keep any hints to an absolute minimum.

Yes, a very straightforward grid fill, and it's not too hard to guess the game and pick up the edited quotation. I'm still trying to sort out how to place the13s and 40s, though. Good fun, and a lot less of a slog than recent puzzles.
Yes, great fun.
Very enjoyable so far (grid filled). Neatly designed and much easier than the last few weeks offerings.
Quite a break from the recent ones; not very tough but fun to see how it all fits together.
Most enjoyable. I haven't finished one this quickly for a long time. Makes a nice change after recent weeks!
Can't understand the preamble yet (the "yet" is a token of optimism) but the grid is starting to fill up reasonably well.
Agreed, but a shame that all the blanks in the preamble were guessable before a single clue was solved - a very early stage for a PDM.
Having chickened out of the last two, both of which looked like long slogs, this was a pleasant enough solve - I agree that the missing words are easily guessed, and filling in the quotation was not difficult either for those of us with long enough memories. I've made an assumption about what goes where, which I can't see any reason to change, given the usual convention. I've also assumed that the winner stays where found, as I can't see an alternative anywhere. Regards to everyone, and glad to be solving again.
Finished and thoroughly enjoyed, even though fairly straightforward
Gentle fun
I am so glad that so many have solved it before I have even reached the end of the preamble.
And I've contravened 10d far too much to make any more progress this evening :-)
BlackHugh - I think that for many of us contravention of 10d is a prerequisite to progress. If not that, then maybe encouraging the other half to stray, so we can be left in peace to crack on with the puzzle.
well failed in my attempt to finish in one go .. but nearly there.... cute puzzle.
Yes, relatively straightforward - all done in a couple of hours. Great fun, though.
All done except for the names of the two children. I have two sets of six letters which don't seem to add up to anything intelligible.
contendo, re-read (and note the sequencing of) the preamble which refers to finding two sets of five letters.
contendo - it is this messy finish that unfortunately lets down a fun puzzle. There is also a missing letter in the clue of 32 down.
Nothing wrong with 32d in my opinion (although perhaps the wordplay is a bit tortuous)...I suggest you take another look, midazolam
Andrew G-S - I know I'm looking for 5-letter names but I have 6 letters in the relevant areas. That's the problem.
