To save RR the bother, I will start the thread this week.
I haven't finished yet, but with a full and fairly easy grid fill, that just leaves the usual preamble and whatever potential disaster is lurking.

Hi Guys. Popping in from another computer today. I have sent the crossword off, having highlighted the relevant squares (not read all the replies here - does anyone else think that three more letters could have been used as well to make the whole thing more formal?), and I don't give two hoots about the four thematic clues, not being sure about any of them. Since it doesn't matter, why were they even in there?
Well if you did get them it would at least show you why this one was scheduled when it was. But you're right in that there is something a bit unsatisfying about getting them not being necessary for sending it in.
Rogue-Elfe - my experience with Listener crosswords is that if you are not absolutely sure about everything - then its wrong ! And wasn't Navajo the language that the Americans used in WW11 for encrypting their messages. The Japanese never cracked it ! Perhaps there's more to this than meets the eye......
Exactly my fear A-p. The fact is that you could read the 'highlighting' sentence in two ways (a classic dangling participle), though the four (presumed) answers don't quite make the grade for the highlighting. But is this intentional? Is there something else hidden apart from the directive? And why no connection - though others seem to have spotted one. Disquieting.
By the way Ruthrobin - I did as you recommended and read http://georgevlistener.wordpress.com/
>>One of the funniest things I have read for a while. It is about that unexpected extra Listener Crossword that appeared online on Christmas Day.
??? What Xmas crossword???
The only post I could find was about the one that appeared on New Year's Day (Auf W...). Was there another post that has been deleted?
BTW there is now a 'Lessener crossword' on the site. Is it a spoof? Has anyone tried it?
Zaphod's blog on his unexpected extra Christmas Day puzzle is on Listen With Others (listenwithothers.com) but you need to scroll down to the third blog since there are some more recent ones after it. The Lessener crossword on http://georgevlistener.wordpress.com/ is very challenging.
This is only my 2nd Listener (I did the other easy one a few months ago)
I have a full grid, have located the 4 clues which can be preceded by the title, but have now drawn a blank in finding the 32 cells to be highlighted. Can someone please help me?
Roslyn251254 Send me an email at [email protected]
It would be unfair to Navajo to give any bigger hint on the AB than has already appeared.
Think about the possible significance of the number you have found Roslyn - as this is only your second Listener you could be at a slight disadvantage in this respect.
Thank you so much Ruthrobin & Mysterons. I shall look forward to another "easy" (for you anyway, maybe not for me just yet!) Listener to have a go.
I had the PDM fairly soon after my last posting, but never got round to rejoining the thread. Quite easy really but I am having to admit defeat on the previous one!
that is unfortunate teuchter2 because from your last posting on that thread it was obvious that you had identified the correct pattern and the problem with the letters that constitute it. there are some later additions to that thread that i'm sure could help you finish - you are very close i think.
teuchter2 - Here is what what Bellabee wrote on the last thread which I found most useful when I had got to your point (and not contravening any "giving the game away" guidelines) "may i iterate - 'it is easier to separate what not to highlight in this case'- best of luck."
(thanks again bellabee)
glad you got that blackhugh but i have a feeling that my posting may have knocked teuchter2 off track - i think the later comments from piano-maths and iangrace and some in-between might be more help. - hope so.
As this thread slows down may I take this opportunity to thank those who shared their thoughts on the 2010 Listener AB trophy for best puzzle.
The clear winner was Shackleton.
Like many others, by the look of it, I have a completed grid - including the elusive 26ac - and 32 highlights but can't make sense of the rest of the preamble. I presume that each of the four clue answers generates a separate statement or phrase. I am wondering whether the three dots of the title imply a missing word to be deduced, then followed by the relevant clue answer plus article. Or is the word article a subtle hint at some other word other than "the" or "a"?
Cruncher, I think Zabadak's post on the previous page raised the same topic and there was a response you might find helpful. Incidentally, returning to 4120, we were thrilled to note that our favourite definition in the BRB put in an appearance. Was this serendipity or perhaps did MynoT read the earlier thread! Can mullet be far behind?
I'm delighted to report a complete success. Grid filled in, the four clues identified and the direction too- I don't know whether my delight is for the clever composition or my own sense of achievement. I have a slight query over the 'nominal' connection (why does he use that word?) but finally I can read the postings on this thread without that gnawing sense of inadequacy - brothers and sisters all!
If anyone gets this before this thread passes into history at 4pm tomorrow, I'd love to know what the "4 answers" were and will be on holiday when the answer comes out. 32 squares shaded and sent in long ago, but any explanations of this bit sent to [email protected] much appreciated.
