Roman Coin

My son found a Roman coin yesterday, it seems genuine enough and we have found similar coins online, but they don't give much info. How would I go about getting it valued?

BDW, what about the bank or a museum? I'm sure a museum curator would know.

More than the coin's face value, the location where it was found will be very useful to add to the finds database. If you go on ebay you'll get an idea of the face value of Roman coins.

It'd have to be in good condition to be worth much. I recall buying a about a dozen from e-bay on a whim a few years back.

Maybe the nearest town has a shop or something that can value it. Have your tried yellow pages ?

Been doing a lot of research on the web and come to the conclusion it may be a fake as there is a line around the edge of the coin. Will still take it to a museum to be sure though.

You might also look closely for the initials WR stamped into the metal - Westair Reproductions!
They do very very good repros but stamp their coins so theu can't be used as fakes. Some norty rascal may have filed off the imprest stamp.....
Whn I worked in a museum we got queues of people wanting us to value their rare roman coins made in birmingham....

If it's got Julius Ceasar's face on it and is dated 55 BC then it's a fake!

If you take it the museum then they will be able to refer you/it to the local Portable Antiquities officer for an appraisal: http://finds.org.uk/

As saxy_jag advised take it along the Portable Antiquities people.Depending where your son found the coin i.e an open field,for example, it could mean some Roman activity in the area....you never know.
