Can anyone explain to me the across clues in the prospect mag

Well, I am giving up! I worked out the logic quite early on (swank swank) but I don't have a Chambers dictionary. OED Shorter isn't good enough this time! Whilst i normally LOVE researching the answers to The Generalist clues and "waste" many an hour going down the paths he/she leads us, this time I am only feeling feelings of frustration. As usual, I enjoyed the "normal" clues and i worked out quite a lot of the single letter clues but now I have to rejoin the "get a life" club. I just don't know how to find the answers to the missing clues without the necessary dictionary

I think you should add Chambers to your Christmas list to Father Christmas. :-)) It really is useful and it seems quite a few compilers use it.

I agree with JimJ. If you are serious about crosswords of the standard found in Prospect you need to get Chambers Dictionary. It is used by a large number of compilers and if you only get one then it is the one to get. I believe currently it is at Edition 11. Money well spent.

How much would it cost please? Father Christmas probably won't manage it but Mummy might. Why is it better than the OED? (apart from doing this particular crossword?) i have managed all previous ones since I started (about 18 months or two years ago) using a combination of OED, Dictionary of Biography and the Times Atlas. And a bit of googling for the obscure words and places
I feel so frustrated about this one!

Wow. that's so much less than she paid for the OED ( a reward for doing well in my degree, and marking the beginning of my "thing" about crosswords). Maybe I can even afford it from previous unspent birthday/Christmas presents. Must check tomorrow.
Why is this one better than the OED which I was told was THE dictionary to own (which I now do...)?

I don't know that it is better - Just that a lot of crossword compilers seem to use it. So if you are going to be doing crosswords it is good to have.

Thank you so much everyone! I would never have got the the theme of across clues! I'm now working through them but stuck on 15A which I think should begin with g so it's g_o_d_c_a_c_

he accross clues are letters which are abbreviations for the answers. Do you have a copy of Chambers? They are all in there.

Thank you. Yes, I have read all the thread and realise that the answers should be in Chambers. Think the problem is mine is too old - printed in 1981! The updated one went with my divorce so I guess I should invest in a new one!!!
