Police have begun an investigation after ex-Premier League
star and football pundit Stan Collymore was allegedly the
victim of racist abuse on the microblogging site Twitter.

Northumbria Police confirmed they have begun inquiries
after they were informed of an allegation received by
Staffordshire Police.

A 21-year-old man has been arrested in connection with
the investigation.

This is the same Stan Colleymore who I remember attacked Ulrika Jonsson in a pub and had attacked a woman called Michelle Green some time earlier. Couldn't happen to a nicer bloke.

'Insults' is all that they are. As I keep saying, I am fed up with cry baby footballers. This country is race and gender obsessed. Insulting someone in an aggressive way is not right, but neither is arresting them. A friendly warning would suffice with the threat of a caution if they do it again. Certainly not wasting police time scouring the country for individuals and taking up pages of newsprint and hundreds of tv hours reporting on it.

What next someone being arrested because they call a player fat or spotty. Children being arrested because they call some kid four eyes at school?

There is real crime out there. Not this.

Would this be a 999 call? If a persons house was burgled one would be lucky to get the police even interested, one would most likely have to wait until the next day at the earliest before they issued one with a crime number.

I'm sorry to use this phrase, but I need to make a point...if you were in a pub, and a black guy came up to you and called you a filthy white c**t, would you shrug, say nothing and walk away?

I think there should be a bit of level-headedness about this - I'm very wary of people being arrested over a racist comment, but then you have to draw the line somewhere - that Emma West (Croydon tram racist) cannot be allowed to abuse people. It offends public decency - in the same way that you can fancy any woman you like, but if you walked down the street shouting stuff about their privates, you shout very much be punished.

There is a world of difference sitting in a pub where someone comes up to you drunk and shouting racial abuse at you and being among thousands in a football stadium.

As for Emma West, well she wasn't drunk or using race to annoy someone. She clearly had experiences either through having no job and she sees immigrants living a nice life or has personal episodes where she has suffered and it had reached a head. In situations like that I think she is fully entitled to do what she did.

The tram may not have been the best place, but she was certainly very brave to say what she believed in. Spending Christmas in jail though is way over the top in relation to the 'crime'.
