St David's Day

Do schools in Wales still get the afternoon off on St David's Day? (When I was in primary school, we used to spend the morning get photographed in our Welsh costumes for the local paper and then we went home at lunchtime.) Excellent tradition (one of the few things I remember about my school days).

Sounds good to me. Have bought my daffodils but still in bud. Hopefully they may bloom tomorrow. The potted ones not big enough yet. Enjoy the day.

no sher, they don't get the afternoon off anymore, but in my grandsons' school they have a special day with photos etc, and they eat welsh cakes as a treat!.......

sherrardj you just brought back memories of what my children enjoyed. they always thought st david's day was great. parents used to arrange a party at the local guides hut in the afternoon. lovely memories. thanks.

Oh, what a shame they stopped it. I had a 'proper' outfit with the works - lacey mop hat thing, felt Welsh hat, strange patterned jacket thing that had the corners pulled back, etc. I expect that would be quite expensive to buy these days (even when I was in primary in the mid to late 70's there were some plastic (!) hats creeping).

I went to a church school and on Ash Wednesday and Ascension Day we had to go to church in the morning and then we had the rest of the day off.Lucky really because I went to the local chapel. (because they had better parties)

Sher, the children still all wear welsh costumes on the day!....lovely to see!..just don't have half a day off, but they do still celebrate St. Davids Day here!.....

When I served in a Welsh infantry regiment (now sadly amalgamated) the first words uttered by every soldier to each other serving within the unit were "Y Dewi Sant".
The morning was then spent playing rubgy, being served lunch by the Officers and Senior NCO's, the afternoon spent in the barracks bar, then an inter-company boxing (a sport I flatly refused to partake in) competition in the evening.
Some of the best days of my life!
