Art Valuation ?
3 Answers
We've got an original artwork by a successful artist whose prints are on sale all over the place. We bought the painting about 27 years ago - and now wonder if it's appreciated in value to any extent. Where is the best place to get a modern painting valued?

I expect there's a google ref. to Christie's website, which will show times and so on. The South Kensington one is pretty close to the V&A. South Ken. tube is close. I haven't been for some time, so just give them a bell first to see that things haven't changed. You used to be able to go in without an appointment...... Obviously they hope to attract owners to put things in their auctions. (Check the auction charge when you phone.) Make enquiries as to whether they have sold other things by the artist in recent times, and how much they fetched. Further afield, I can't help I'm afraid but every large city would have it's own auction house with a valuation desk. A paid valuation is not a good idea as it could be a percentage of the value, if known, and you will have to pay the fee without having sold the picture. By just taking it in to any dealer you wouldn't get a true value, as any dealer can offer you only the sum that allows him/her to make a profit from that shop.
