Cigarette Displays Ban
Will the ban really discourage youngsters from smoking? Probably not. Will more people stop smoking because of this new ruling? Probably not. No doubt that some smokers who do not necessarily have a favourite brand, will be unable to compare prices in the future. And packets which may carry a promotion, will be hidden from the consumer.
My local supermarket have a sliding door cabinet holding the cigarettes. I'm sure the assistant will soon be bored with opening it just for a packet of fags!
Yet the 'small' shopkeepers have another three years' grace before they are obliged to hide the ciggies. Strange law that - one rule for one and one rule for others. Typical though and government-consistent.

"Will more people stop smoking because of this new ruling? " No, probably not- the ever increasing price of them will be far more effective!
"No doubt that some smokers who do not necessarily have a favourite brand, will be unable to compare prices in the future." Arent the prices displayed on a board?
"And packets which may carry a promotion, will be hidden from the consumer. " no cigarettes or tobacco packs have promotions on them, haven't for a long while now.
"My local supermarket have a sliding door cabinet holding the cigarettes. I'm sure the assistant will soon be bored with opening it just for a packet of fags! " yes, no doubt they will, as I will when my shop (Co op) does it, but what can you do?

It's total madness I don't smoke but would love to go and ask to see the selection of cigarettes and prices just out of badness.
No way will this stop people smoking,I fully understand goverment wanting to promote healthier lifestyles for people, but people have the right to choose.
If they did the same with wine I would be a right nuisance holding up the queue to look for the a bargain.

If the government wanted to promote healthy lifestyles for people, they would make the selling of tobacco products illegal.
Oh no the hypocrites wont do that, where would they then get their huge loss in revenue from?

As a smoker i think it's pointless as is the plain packaging plan. I started smoking because a parent did and then a boyfriend. I wonder how many smokers started because they saw them in shops? It's only education about the health effects hitting home and the price that will finally persuade me to try to give up.
If no-one smokes, where are they going to get the £20Bn or so in VAT and duty, which goes towards treating all the alcohol related illnesses currently blocking up the NHS. This ban will only add more confusion, and shop assistants will suffer from shoulder and arm strain from the repetitive opening and closing of the shutters.
In the legislation banning the display of tobacco there is provision for price lists to be displayed, something which Morrisons at least have not cottoned on to yet. I shall have some fun next time I go. The girls already dread me coming as they know that when they open the sliding doors I will say in a loud voice, "Is that where you keep the dirty magazines as well?"

in view of the fact that the fire service claim 50% of all fires are caused by smokers and a similar number of NHS patients are being treated for smoking related diseases, there will be more than enough .
