the icons what's usually in bottom right hand corner are in the bottom left hand corner, sorry for sounding thick.
I'm no tecchie, but have you rebooted the pc?
have you felt just under the screen..should be buttons to move screen left and right...

Hi albaqwerty,I said I was thick where computer are concerned, what do you mean reboot?
switch off...power right down and restart..
I did the same last week, valerie - press control + F11, it worked for me!
Safe shutdown and restart. But that would only help if your start button was showing.

Typical, the likes of Chuck, Rojash or Chris aren't around when needed. (They are really good)
I restore the computer back to a previous day.

Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore.

Choose the latest day for restoring (highlighted).

Always works for me.
We don't need the men when we've got girl power :-D

Can't find any buttons murraymints, bet you're all fed up with me already.I'm getting really frustrated, sorry.
If you press control + Alt + delete buttons, the task manager menu will come up - that has a Restart option.
^ those buttons I mention are on your keyboard, not the screen
if you just turn off power at plug when it comes up gas I n you will be offered a safe start up option.. just hit return when that option is highlighted...see if bars are back then..
Have you done Ctrl + F11?
forgot about control alt and delete, as Boxy says, but keep them pressed down, don't do it one at a time.
Is it just when you are using your internet browser e.g. Internet Explorer? Is the taskbar visible on the desktop when you are not running any programs?

p.s. system restore is usually total overkill for this type of problem
