What is the consensus ... PHILIP? or PIRRIP?

(This is worse than PRISE? or PRIZE?)

Hi Crofter  -  Very occasionally that are two correct answers to one clue.  The printed solution should then show one or more cells with diagonal splits.  Years ago this would happen with 'shown' and 'shewn' (although the latter is no longer common and would probably now be disallowed). As for this clue, I really don't know and maybe it doesn't even matter which of the two possibilities you use.  However, there is no choice between PRISE and PRIZE. The solution is PRISE from the structure of the clue (in my humble opinion!). Cheers, ja

According to my copy of Great Expectations.....and | quote


"My father's family name being Pirrip and my christian name Philip."
Pirrip was the name on his father's tombstone.
I would take a couple of Anadin and toss a coin!!
His actual name was Philip Pirrip.
