1. lacrosse - A team game, originally played by North American Indians, in which the ball is thrown, caught, and carried with a long-handled stick having a curved L-shaped or triangular frame at one end with a piece of shallow netting in the angle. Sounds as if it's a French word.

whist means hush, be silent. An old word, not now in common use, but still recognisable in some dialects, e.g. Geordie "Whisht, lads, hide yer gobs" (The Lambton Worm, a folk song.
The game of Bid Whist /plus whist lad had thee gob is a saying up here in the north for shut up.
