The wrong one was published in the paper. Why not try Carte Blanche Azed 2157 available on the Guardian website?
Question Author
Can only see the same one as in the paper on the website roslyn - can you post a link please ?
Question Author
Thanks roslyn !

Do you happen to know if they have extended the deadline for the clue-writing comp ?
Sorry no - I would just send it anyway - it was their mistake and they should make allowances
I emailed the website about this after I did last week's Azed (clearly NOT a carte blanche in my paper!) by Monday evening, then checked the site and found the correct grid.

Seems the printers were thrown by seeing a blank grid, thought it was a mistake, and printed another puzzle which may well be 2158! This was corrected after one edition, so some people buying the paper will have got the genuine 2157 Carte Blanche competition puzzle.

Today's Observer says next Saturday is the deadline for 2157, and the reply to my email agreed that the deadline would be extended. Presumably those of us who got a paper containing 2158 can submit a solution to a puzzle which (for everyone else) hasn't appeared yet!
Although I just checked the website and found 2158 (which was indeed the one printed last week in my copy of the paper). So the website is now running a week ahead of the newspaper!?

Will the paper print 2158 and 2159 next week to catch up?
Question Author
No, today's paper does have 2158 (again, for some of us), so next week will be back on track with 2159. I presume that, if the deadline for 2157 has been extended as you say, they will accept a web print-out.
That's bizarre! So different editions of today's paper again have different crosswords. If it's a regional thing, too bad for anyone visiting friends or family in another part of the country who buys the Observer only to find the same puzzle as last week!

My email reply said there would be an explanation from the readers' editor, but all the paper actually says is 'This is a repeat of last week's Azed as it failed to appear in some editions'.
Question Author
Sorry, I'm confusing things now. When I said 'paper', I had only checked online - I didn't realise that the website and actual newspaper were running different crosswords - this is indeed bizarre !
