You've given me the "e" from Hebburn, so think it could be windhover - another name for kestrel: h for hissing, over for on top of....no idea about the snake - sideWINDer? Thanks again for your help - glad someone else is up at this hour. Off to bed now - goodnight

Presumably "wind" comes from "snake" i.e. to follow a meandering path. Clever clue.
