382 construction workers dead in two years.
185 this year alone
(See front page of today's Guardian)
Would you care to express your shock and surprise here?

The difference with the UK statistics is that it refers to all sites. The Grauniad article is only referring to sites connected with the world cup. (Perhaps it's hard to distinguish between a hotel dedicated to WC fans and general growth of the nation's infrastructure, just now)
There's been manic building activity all across the gulf states for the past decade though. Run Google Earth and use the 'historical imagery' function to see how fast it's all growing (Dubai, Abu Dhabi, all those artificial islands).
Sensible strategy to try and get a tourism industry up and running before the US gets energy independence and cuts off their main source of income. ;-)
As for Brazil? I'm not attempting to keep track but it's only a handful and they've been underway for 4 years longer. Higher standards there, clearly. (Compared to us, they make whole airliners, not just the wings...) :-/

@Sqad
any thoughts on sudden cardiac death syndrome. Apparently migrant workers are particularly prone to this, worldwide.
Usually, the country of origin makes no difference to the risk but I'm wondering whether switching from living at high elevation, in Nepal, down to somewhere near sea level has anything to do with this syndrome? Thickened blood from living at altitude?
@DTC
I don't understand why the article would single out the stat solely for Nepalese workers, whereas an all-nations figure would have made more sense, plus a larger, even more shocking figure.
Have found an article link now

Gulp. They're still working on the figures for workers from other countries...
"The Nepalese make up about a sixth of Qatar's 2 million-strong population of migrant workers. Verified figures for the 2013 death rates among those from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and elsewhere have yet to emerge."
Well spotted, DTC
