Searching For A Childrens Book
19 Answers
I have asked this question on AB a few years ago but now can't find the answer, thus this is a repeat !
I am trying to trace a childrens book, published after the War, which I read in the late 50's. It was called something like " The Enchanted Forest/Wood" but not those words exactly, if you know what I mean !
It concerned a group of animals that had to leave their woodland homes because of some impending disaster...new houses, new road, etc. So they upped sticks and moved to another forest/wood. These animals were talking animals, and wore clothes, in the true tradition of all childrens books. I think the Owl was in charge. They had proper furniture in their little homes and they smokes pipes, etc, etc.
The author was a chap that wrote lots of other books, not all of them for children. I seem to remember that there was a sequel or two. I wish I could remember more details !
Sorry that this isn't much to go on but I have every faith that AB will come up trumps, as it always does !

Its "Into the Happy Glade" by Trevor Dudley-Smith. I should have looked in my own AB profile, so silly me !

Boo...I can get it today but I really can't afford or justify £210 ! AbeBooks.com have some as well but just as daft prices. This has now become a antiquarians book, with prices to match. I don't want to "collect" it...just read again, after a gap of over 50 years...pure nostalgia. Two years ago I could have got the book for just over £100 ! I should have bought it then, read it again, and then sold it on and made a packet !
I wish I had held on to those books of my boyhood. I used to have a few 1st edition Biggles, bought by a very indulgent and wealthy maiden Aunt, which would be now be worth a small fortune. I also had many hardcover Enid Blytons', probably now worth quite a bit.
But we must learn from our mistakes apparently !

Thanks Maggie...what a wonderful lot you are here on AB !
The sequel "By a Silver Stream" is relatively cheap and easy to get, but
"Into the Happy Wood" unfortunately isn't I'm afraid. One of my favourite activities is go browsing in market stalls and second-hand books shops, so I will keep on looking.
I expect that 10/20 years ago, you could have picked up a copy for very little but the Internet has made antiquarian booksellers of us all !
Now I have to go to work, or face the sack ! Many thanks to everybody, and I will check again this afternoon, on my return.
