"In symmetrically placed across answers, find and shade a relevant number and its lesser-known alternative".
Has Tim Moorey lost the plot - or is it me?
There is only one "symmetrically placed across answer" (ISAAC), for which the clue is "Man with tax-free investment on account?"
Please put me out of my misery - even if it hurts!

Thanks for that TOMMO33. The penny has dropped. It's all about emergency numbers. 999 is represented by 3 IXs which are partnered horizontally by solutions containing the letters ONE, ONE and TWO respectively. Hence, "the lesser-known alternative". I certainly didn't know about 112 until today.

Not familiar with this crossword but Isaac must be correct solution to the clue given.
I'm not familiar with this crossword either but suspect they are looking for PAIRS of symmetrically placed answers rather than single, centrally positioned ones.
Isn't there any symmetry at all with the other across answers?

OK, if you accept NE and SW as opposites. Then I find the letters IX in three of them. So maybe all I need is "a lesser-known alternative" for one, nine or ten.
Seems a little far fetched.
If those two match, then normally NW and SE should do as well. However, he says 'a relevant number', and I would take that as referring to the puzzle number 999. That's the emergency call number that may have a special name, or it could be CMXCIX, or XMIX or perhaps IM, in Roman numerals. Is there anything like any of those? A bit unlikely from the sound of things. Good luck.

How clever. Well done, nigrior. Of course, three IXs. That didn't dawn on me. I hope aquagility picks this up.

I salute you, TOM (will that do?). And also nigrior (better not try to shorten that).
I'd found the three IXs and shaded them, but without your help would have got no further. To have cracked this without even having the grid in front of you is just brilliant!
I do recommend The Week crossword - not (usually) difficult, but a bit different.
Thanks, and best wishes to all who answered.
Aq.
Thanks Aquagility, but it's nigrior who deserves your praise. My daughter gets the magazine. I must ask her to keep the copies for me.Good luck, both of you
