14. Spanner ?? (any amount of letters)
11. Weld (Join) ER (Queen) = Welder
14 Spanner has been given several times but you don't 'clamp' a spanner to a nut.
14 A Gripper is a wrench which actually 'grips' or 'clamps' to a nut when pressure is applied. Used by plumbers where there is not enough room for a spanner.
Not doing this quiz so haven't noticed previous questions/answers. I appreciate you don't 'clamp' spanner to a nut but just wondered if the setter could have written the clue better unless there is definitely a better answer.
I've no better answer for 14 but 'spanner', 'gripper' don't seem cryptic enough to me (not when you look at the parsing for 11)
Never heard of a gripper as a tool name in that sense though Dave. Grippers are used to increase hand strength. Grips are used on nuts.
14 How many letters?
A Gripper wrench is also known as a 'pipe wrench'. As I said they bare a common tool for a plumber and used to go under sinks, basins and baths. It comprises of a bar which has attached to the end a swivel sprung jaw which clamps around the nut. Am most surprised you haven't seen one in use.
elliemay - previous seen posted 7 letters.
Have just seen these in Screw Fix book where they are called 'basin wrenches'. However , as Captain says there could be something more cryptic... Well, I did try.
I know the tool you mean Dave but I have never heard it referred to as a gripper.
Probably because that's what it does to a nut, it almost clinches it. Much may depend on the setter.

From what I have seen, most of the clues are cryptic.
So maybe this is a word for 'a clamp'+a type of edible nut??

Hair grips on Amazon are advertised as Hair Clamps or Hair Grippers. They are clamped to a Nut.
My Gran used them, they're like a toothed bulldog clip. ^^^^^^
