In 1981, Fay Weldon played down the attribution with, "I was certainly in charge of the copy at the time when it was used as a slogan as the main theme for an advertising campaign. The phrase itself had been in existence for some time and hung about in the middle of paragraphs and was sometimes promoted to base lines. Who invented it would be hard to say. It is possible, indeed probable, that I put those words together in that particular order but would not swear to it."
The Oxford Dictionary of Quotations also suggests Mary Gowing as possible author.
