For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.Leicester Square area is the place for clubs but they aren't cheap.Metra is ok where I used to go most when I lived in Covent Garden as is China White ( not as good as it's cracked up to be but worth it just to say you've been), plus you'll see some legless celebrity so if you've got your cameraphone with you you might be able to flog a shot to the News of the World and get your holiday paid for:)
If you fancy a hilarious night, but the club is dead rough, try the Astoria on Tottenham Court Rd, but they do hiold GAY night there as well so be aware:) I never went there and didn't have a blast of a time,really good crowd and atmosphere if a bit weird, but if it's sophisticated you're after definately China White or Metra, but they are strict on dress code etc.

going to do touristy things : visitlondon.co.uk or trawl through the referals. on ask .co.uk. Chinatown is fun for an informal buffet lunch. If the place is crammed with tourists ie Easter, avoid Covent Garden tube station walk in the 'fresh air' from Leicester Square.
If you can't get one before , buy a pocket a to z from Smiths at the train stations.
