Conservatory or Summer House?

Due to the layout of my house I cannot have an attached conservatory.

My garden is quite small but there is room for an octagonal summer house up to 8ft x 8ft at the bottom of the garden.

Is it possible to have a 'freestanding' conservatory, or would the traditional wooden summer house be better?

In case it's important, it will be west facing, on flat land.

Ethel, we have a wooden summer house which stands away from the house, and I think it's great. Plenty of windows and big doors that open wide and it works very well for us. We're lucky enough to have a small conservatory as well, but it's too hot to use in the summer, so the "posh shed" is much nicer then.

Thanks for that, sixpence. I think that's the way I'll go - it's something I've always wanted since childhood really.

you may also be able to put a covered walkway to it; if wanted & practical.

It's a lovely idea, isn't it? I have this picture of a long flowing dress and a basket of roses over the arm.:)
