I've a feeling that there may not be a definitive answer to my question, but exactly how long is a piece of string?

The summarised answer is that it is pretty much as long as you want it to be, depending on the scale of the ruler you use.
This is because it is pretty much impossible to straighten a peice of string to be able to measure it. Once you think you have it straight you zoom in a bit and it is all zigzag again.
Think of a river that looks 1000 miles long on a map of a country, then look at a small part of the same river on an ordnance survey map, there will be hundreds of small twists revealed, this process can continue infinitely.
