a signwriter was asked to make a sign saying, for example "jones and Sons". the sign was not ok because there was not enough space left between Jones and and, and and and sons
It should really read: "...'Jones' and 'and' and 'and' and 'Sons'." That is, the relevant words involved in the actual sign should be isolated from the standard conjunction 'ands' by using inverted commas around them.
Otleybard, I know that one (mispent childhood reading too many Joke Books!) but I don't want to post cos it'll prove what a saddo I am (and it's not even raining!)
Dear Jomes, without the inverted commas, the word-collection...it can't be called a sentence...is nonsense. Since I'm 69, I'd be prepared to bet that I've "got out" rather mnore frequently than you ever have!
