I suppose I should know the answer...never mind!! Good to post with you directly, not done so for a while! Although I have read all your contributions...and re-iterate what Crofter (I think!) said..it's good to have you on board!
The title King (or Queen) of England ceased to exist in 1707 when the Kingdom of England was merged with the Kingdom of Scotland to create the Kingdom of Great Britain. Queen Anne became the last Queen of England and the first Queen of Great Britain. The Act of Union 1800 united the Kingdom of Great Britain with the Kingdom of Ireland to form the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.
So the first queen of the United Kingdom was as oldwoman says ....Victoria
Good evening ontarioice,
How are you both. I think this is the first time I've seen you post a question and I don't know the answer - sorry. Hope you've got the answer from the above posts. Just been out for a good night at our local club, but now it's time for bed. Talk to you again soon.
John.
Shaneystar2. Yes, that's what I read in Wikipedia, but am not always sure that that site is 100% correct.
Pauline also used that site and we agree with you, re Anne.
I think the catch in the puzzle was the words "United Kingdom" as opposed to England solo.
I'm settling for Queen Anne.
Teacher1. Hello and Goodnight to you. It's still late evening here and raining cats and dogs.
How can Queen Anne be the first Queen of of the United Kingdom ....it's a fact whether or not you believe Wiki that the act of Union with Northern Ireland did take place until 1800.Before that this was Great Britain and Anne was a queen of it.She was long dead before the Union took place.
The question either requires the Queen of Great Britain which was Anne or the Queen of the UK which was Victoria. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anne_of_Great_Bri tain
Yes, Pauline you are correct. As was Shaneystar2 and Old Woman.
Apologies. I don't know how I got so confused.
So it's settled then? Queen Victoria.
I should have known as it's a local quiz and, Bless her, (Victoria) we get a Civic Holiday every May in her honour.
Sorry Shaneystar2. It was my mistake which I have corrected. The answers are so slow (from my end anyway) that they're passing each other in the posting of.
You may get another if Elizabeth ll takes over her length of reign!!...she's well on target!!..or nearest to it for a while!!...or does somebody know differently!!??!!
Well ..Her Maj has been on the throne for 54 years .Queen Victoria reigned for 64 years so she has ten years to go which will make her ninety years old . I hope so ..she seems a very fit and robust woman and her mother lived to a great age ..so....you never know. I can remember the Coronation so I hope she continues to reign over us for the foreseeable future.
God help us when shes gone !!
Amen. Long may she reign.
Contrary to newspaper reports we Canadians do NOT want rid of the monarchy.
Some folks in a certain area of this country might, but the majority of the people are great monarchists.
I just wish she'd visit us more often.
