I am not asking for any answers but would be grateful for confirmation (or otherwise) that the following letters are correct for 3 down ... Y?U?G ?E?L?I?

Not yet able to finalise this answer, so would be grateful for this assistance.

Samurite: I should have mentioned this when I answered your post, but here goes now.
I haven't heard of Button's, Donm Salter's or Tom's. As someone on this side of the Atlantic would this be correct or shall I keep Googling?
If they are folks widely known in the UK please set me on track. I can think of an answer if they are chains such as Starbucks?

Hello sarumite This is the worse puzzle but a challenge, if you want an hint 3d is a character in a play.

I have Coffee pot ....This is all I can find to fit with my word finder.I am going on the premise that these are "Diners" as in Toms Diner from the song by Suzanne Vega .Hope this helps ...but I am off to bed now as it's nearly one in the morning here ...will be around tomorrow ...Nite nite.

Interesting that puzzlers have been given an extra week to solve this very much harder December puzzle .... so, no need for any urgency over answers yet?

I think though,as brilliant the reference to SUZANNE VEGA LYRICS "Tom's Diner" I am sitting In the morning At the diner On the corner I am waiting At the counter For the man To pour the coffee ...

The connection that Didymus had in mind is Coffeehouses ... possibly, Didymus has recently read a book lying on his coffee table entitled A History of London Coffee Houses:

In 1695, James Salter (fashioned himself 'Don Saltero'), opened a coffeehouse in Chelsea. The chief atttraction of the coffeehouse, from Salter's point of view, was the array of natural detritus and colonial souvenirs displayed on the walls and ceilings.

1706 - Thomas Twining opens Tom's Coffee house, later re-named Golden Lyon which became famous for selling loose leaf tea

Daniel Button owned Button's Coffee House, situated in Russell Street, Covent Garden. This coffee house had many literary customers and in particular Richard Steele who used it as an office for the Guardian which he began to publish in 1713.

And Yes ... I have finished it too..... entirely through Googling and the worldwideweb. It is possible to do - but, painful!!

pega - I have "Kerry Bog Pony " for 1 across, and will weaken and accept your answer for 3d.

I have not been able to spend much time on this puzzle since it became available, but hope to do it justice today!!

Good morning sarumite, very many thanks for 1a I looked in a lot of books.
glad to help 3d is from lst act of The Man of Mode and the character and answer is YOUNG BELLAIR.
I've done most of it, its fun to search out the clues and to read all about coffee pot I didn't get that clue but was all that fitted and I went by crockery part, have a good day more rain today,

......... thanks pega, I was really struggling on that one .. but have had little time for research over past two days owing to other (mainly social) commitments. I am about � of the way through and hope to finalise today, but there may well be a cry for help before the end of the month!

I was unable to find any reference to "farmers workmaid" on web searches, but once I had found the K as first letter for 1a, the name kerry came into my mind for some completely unknown reason ... this then led me to the answer.

Do you know I spent about a bloomin' hour reading that wretched play by some obscure restoration playwright and nowhere does it actually give that quote. It doesn't make sense to me but is all that fits.
