Could it be a battle or a siege and in the distance could be heard the bagpipes being played by the relieving forces?

Following up on the lead (above) it would be Jessie Brown who heard the bagpipes as she was about to be "relieved" at Lucknow!
You are probably right crofter...I was thinking in general terms of "the beseiged" but Jessie Brown is more specific.
