The OED gives both Nor'wester and North-wester, like wise Sou'wester and South-wester ;all are described as winds or gales blowing from that direction. A Sou'wester or South-wester is, of course, also an oilskin or waterproof hat favoured by seamen. Hope this doesn't confuse the issue even more!
