Derbyshire, common ????
17 Answers
I've just read a post dated 18.02.07 in the ' word origins'
section by emi-elektrik who stated that as a word was common it probably originated in Derbyshire !!!!!
Can anybody offer any sort of explanation for this assumption please ? xx

Does anyone know how it works, this 'deleting post' thing ?
P.S Derbyshire is most definitely still here and as beautiful and un-common as ever !! xx

Well i live there, and its full of chavs mouthing off in the most common manner ever. If you went to derbyshire and experienced the small villages of newton, tibshelf, blackwell, westhouses and also alfreton, youd see what i was on about.
im not a chav, but i talk as common as. not when im typing so this isnt anything to go by. But Derbyshire, its pretty, but the majority of the people are common. Same goes for Nottinghamshire. Infact Nottinghamshire is worse. Please go to Mansfield to see this.

There are parts of every county that are less desirable than others but I think the picture you have painted is very unfair.
What about Bakewell, Matlock,Ashover,Youlgreave, Buxton,Hassop,Ashford-in-the-water,Eyam, in fact all the peak district.
If you've only ever been to the places you mention, why not get out and about a bit more.
And it begs the question, why do you stay in Derbyshire at all if you find it and us so objectionable ( not being flippant, just interested to know )

oh absolutely right emi-elektrik, common as muck they are. I live in Derbyshire but I'm originally from Notts & many of my mum's family came from the Mansfield area. They multiplied like rabbits & spread to neighbouring towns at an unspeakable rate & I believe that they are probably responsible for whole of the Notts/Derby area being the chav paradise that you describe.
For heaven's sake, the majority are common??? hahahaha..... when I stop laughing I'll tell my sister about this, she'll love it.

why dont i move? because im 15! i have no choice where i live. duh! and Robinia i dont get what your on about are you being sarcy or serious because your just confusing. Ive been to matlock, thats common also. ive been to bakewell, which is snobby but im sure there are commoners there somewhere, they definately have tarts (haha i make myself laugh) ive been to ashover but only to a field there so i can pass no judgement, and the other places ive never been. Ive been alot more places than the ones mentioned though, just because i named them doesnt mean thats the end of my travelling experiences. Look if your all going to have a big paddy over it then im sorry but i was just stating my opinion and having a bit of a laugh about the place ive grown up and i live in. Jeez, no people on here can take a joke can they?
And the majority are common?Maybe they arent common looking or common acting, but incase you seem to have lost track of what i was orginally talking about I WAS TALKING ABOUT THE WAY THEY TALK!!! and ive never in my entire life met anyone from derbyshire who talks posh and doesnt use common vocabulary.

emi I made my reply tongue-in-cheek because I can see the the funny side of it. There's no way I'd get into a 'big paddy' over such a sweeping statement as 'the majority are common'?
Is that each & everyone of the 933,000 people in Derbyshire? That's a heck of a lot of Burberry.... hahaha!
Maybe you're confusing common speaking with accent? Many people have local accents & don't speak like the Queen (who does?) but it doesn't make them all common & 'chavs'.
Please try not to be judgemental about people because of the way they talk or assume that because certain areas are less desirable, all who live there must be common. You might miss out on meeting & talking to some interesting people.

I get your point but im not judging people, i also lost what what we were originally on about. Im not calling everyone chavs, hell if i were referring to the accent as being chavvy id be a huge chav, and im not. But the things i hear the Derbyshire lot say are very common, slang is more the word i am looking for rather than common. As slang is a common way of talking, which is what im on about. Robinia it was not you particularly who i was reffering to as having a big paddy, it was more the question author, who seems to believe i know nothing of the place i live, when in actual fact i do, and seems to be having a go at me about countryside when i was on about talking.
Im not calling everyone common, but everyone i have met in derbyshire TALKS common.

Not my place to be concerned I know, but you come across as an extremely negative and unhappy person for someone of your tender years.
Tell us something about your likes and dislikes that will paint a more positive picture of you.
Also, relish the fact that you're only 15, unless of course you have reason not to. Hope not tho x x
P.S. Usual cracking post from you Thicko2006 !

actually he's never had a girlfriend....ahh, poor lad. Wonder if he'd fancy a JR? haha...she'd have to show him what to do.

well ill start my likes and dislikes with a quote from my english teacher which i was told today "You are very cynical, which is why I cast you as rizzo [we are doing Grease for out school play] you see the world in a different way to everyone else, and i like that"
so you see, i will come across as unhappy. I am actually very happy, as Shaun [ermm..] will tell you!
My likes?
I love acting, and my boyfriend Shaun, my friends mean the world to me, and i love my family. I love shopping and money and new clothes. I am self obsessed and love to pose and look in the mirror, my friends refer to me as saint vanity. i like music, and i like reading-especially books by Nick Hornby and Christopher Brookmeyer. I love sex, wlthough i shouldnt hehe. I like going walking and i like taking pictures. I love compliments! I love being me :)
My dislikes?
I dislike dogs (sorry to dog owners), i dislike rap and i dont like slow people walking in front of me. i dont like dull aches. I dont like upsetting the people close to me. I dont like my sister being pregnant-i dont like my sister! i dont like it when i am too young to do things. I dont like it when people shout at me. I dont like it when people treat me like dirt. I dont like cold mornings and i dont like hot nights. I dont like being ill. I dont like strict rules and i dont like narrow minded people [although you will probably all think i am one due to the fact i called derbyshires accent common-but im not!] I dont like high expectations of me which i cant acheive. I dont like letting my family down.
is that positive enough?
