Rope in one of those marginalised here, say (7)
Answer=PAINTER

Just got to say that is the best clue I have seen for a long time in the DT. It took me a while to work out the second half of the clue and its relevance to the answer though!

I thought 26a was excellent, Henri Matisse being an artist and fairly modern

See in his art, beginning of modernism perhaps 5,7
But WHY is the answer PAINTER? Put me out of my misery!
Painters names were the solutions to the the puzzle on top, bottom and each side of the crossword. (The margins)
Sorry Milkmeister I think I've not answered your query very well. A painter is a rope used when mooring a dinghy and possibly other boats as well.
The question was from me.... and that IS a fabulous clue then! Thanks for the reveal. I never would have got there myself. While I am on... is 8d Albrecht Durer? Thats what I have put in but I can't quite square it as an anagram of bad clue and three r's.
Thanks for that milkmeister... I had put pointer . Really good clue.
Albrecht Durer is an anagram of "the bad clue" , plus 3 "r"s.
