Ah, there you are, K. I knew you would know!!
I am not sure about 8 down. Don hit, then treated (3,7). G?T?R?S?E? Get (got) dressed? Why?
e.g if you say something is wonderful its OK but if you say it is so wonderful its more than OK
Argee there is a Mafia Don (at present in jail ) called Gotti !

Question Author
Oh, K, I have led such a sheltered life!! Thank you. I can send it off now and maybe win a 15 book token. I will try not to let it change my life.
Argee2 I think the answer is GET DRESSED and I also think that it's got nothing to do with a Mafia Don!

Don (clothes) = Get Dressed
Get (hit) as in "GET CARTER"
Treated = Dressed (as in a wound)

Anyway, that's what I think!
Crofter and Argee I think I watch too many 'Godfather' films!

All those Dons and hit-men.
K ~ that was done with such style! Hey "GET CARTER" was a pretty violent film as well!

The Amos / Amok debate is trickier still. I even had to check that Amok was truly a Biblical character!

On balance I go for AMOK and the wordplay is as follows:
very good graduate = excellent master of art
= knockout MA = KOMA (raised) <<< = AMOK

I'm going on the order of the words in the clue and the quality of Everyman. What d'ya think?
I hadn't even considered Amok as I immediately thought of the Book Of Amos in the Old Testament.
I also ,on balance, like the o/s (outstanding) part of the solution.

Cheers K

Thank you K and crofter. I have just come back from the pub quiz (no, we did not win) and seen your further answers. It was because I could not decide between Amos and Amok that I posed the question. Sorry, K, but I am going with crofter on this occasion. After all, there is that book token at stake - I won it once many years ago and bought a new Chamber's with it. :-)
Argee2 Please come back to us with the chosen name once the solutions are published. That will be the acid test!
Argee2 ~ I am about to go out for my Pub Quiz, where I am the quizmaster! Once every three months it falls to me!
