Over the past few years I have been lucky enough to win a runners-up prize in both the Telegraph cryptic and YOU magazine crosswords. When I send them in now I use the names of friends and relatives as I think they would not choose my name twice - am I right ?

I've never won on those crosswords, Hardy. But about 4 years ago, I won the Financial Times Cryptics (much easier than you might think, I promise!) 3 times in 4 months, using the same name and address. Draw your own conclusions.
No, sorry hardy49, but that is incorrect. I have won a runners-up prize in the Telegraph cryptic three times - and no doubt there are others who have won more times than I have.
I have won the S. Times Mephisto several times using same name each time. Also won S. Times cryptic. Been runner up twice in Saga Xword, so I think your fears are unfounded - I'm sure the staff have enough to do without keeping a record of all winners.

Thank you all very much
In the space of just a few weeks last summer, I won first prize on the Mephisto, followed by a runner-up prize in the same puzzle in my partner's name...because I had the same doubts as you have...followed by another runner-up prize in my own name again! I'm pretty sure, therefore, that the checkers for that particular crossword do not keep a record of winner's names and/or addresses. The same probably applies to others.

Thanks again
Isnt the mephisto difficult?which speaks for itself "less competition"?I used to win many comps until this website set up,having said that I wouldnt exchange the camaraderie for the odd pen which is rubbish for use on newspaper! I will however try your method hardy49 lets see if it works.Julie
Prizes go to the first correct entries opened.

They would be breaking their own rules if they discarded a correct entry because it was submitted by someone who had won before.

I am sure you are worrying unnecessarily - and possibly landing your friends and relatives on mailing lists where they don't want to be...
My mum has won twice on the Daily Express Crusader Crossword.
I won the Sat Tel gen knowledge and also think like you, now I put the name of a friend who runs the Shar Pei rescue club, should she win, I am happy for the money to go and help her dogs, but so far no luck, but I did win her a fiver in the local rag comp for the same reason.
I have also won both runners-up prizes for Saga crossword last year. I am still hoping to win the first prize.
I'm just glad to hear there are ANY prizewinners at all!! Been doing crosswords for years and never won a thing!!
Me too!!!!! Never won a thing. Not even a raffle!!!
In the last 5 years I've won the Saturday GK Telegraph prize TWICE, and a runners-up prize twice (in the last 6 months). All entries submitted in my own name.
