5a Have you left "is" out of the clue ? I feel it should be AVESTA. A(uthorised) V(ersion) + est ( is French ) + a
6d Verbena...... prune, chop, uproot are all verbs....+ Ena
Question Author

A?E???
agenda ....a hidden agenda is a discriminatory policy
sorry....I'm rethinking that....amende?

Thank you Slaney !

I went dashing in with agenda, and then couldn't account for "fine thing" & then got obsessed by "fine" and couldn't account for the rest of the clue !!
Question Author
I think it may well be amende,as the "d" fits in with 13 across, which reads,One sees nothing American around the room(7) which gives us O?E?L?D.If however it was amerce then it would read O?E?L?C.
Question Author
Thanks a lot Slaney, just read the clue properly and it finally dawned on me.Cheers!
