I think it's called a rathskeller
No it isn't ..it's a Rathskeller ...and this is the correct answer to the clue in yesterday DTGK

Just to elucidate ..a Bierkeller is a cellar where they keep beer. and has become synonymous with a public house but
a Rathskeller is a tavern below street level selling beer; originally a German restaurant in the basement of a town hall.
A rath is councillor .

I agree the answer they want is 'Rathskeller' but to my mind there is no such word. The correct spelling is
'Ratskeller' (from the German word for an official - Rat).
However that does not fit in.
I agree brianbee..but my Duden gives both Rat and Rath ..and according to Mr S. who is my German other half either spelling is acceptable .
Rath, as an alternative spelling of Rat, a German advisory or ruling council.
