can anybody explain why that even though the weather and feather quiz doesn't have to be in until January we have all helped each other without any fussing . but with the money quiz nobody seems to be able to ask questions as they say it's to soon even though it has got to be in earlier.could it be anything to do with the prize money.

in answer to your question - there are some current answerbank members (mainly 'original / early' members) on this site who band together and form opinion as to whether this quiz or that quiz should be answered on this site or not, and when (e.g. immediate, later, never etc!) .... an answerbank mafia .... personal emailing and direct contact goes on .....
for example:
the Quiz 'Quizmail' is set by former members (who have influence with current members) on this site, so the answerbank mafia sets out to thwart any questions on this quiz being answered by current answerbank members.
there are also persons who like to get answers 'offsite' to such quizzes like 'Money' and then come onsite 'to impress' with their ability .....
the world is a merry go-around and this site 'Answerbank' is no different - there are manipulators and those manipulated.
..... you can work out the rest yourself .....

I agree with square bear - I don't do any of the quizzes - just some of the newspaper crosswords. I like the challenge and helping others. I am a bit peeved that some of my answers have been removed for no apparent reason - is it a fit of pique from others, as I haven't posted anything offensive? Nor have I given more than I've been asked for... It's difficult to work out the unofficial etiquette that appears to have evolved on this site.

unfortunatley, it is an inherrent weakness in this site, that it is so easy for this group to rpeort reasonable replies so as to get them wiped ......
the site management has not succeeded in standing up to them, although a couple of previous editors tried and ended up being hounded ....
just keep posting answers ....

athenae - thanks for your reply. I will continue to post answers - I am undergoing chemo at the moment and my oncologist told me my brain wouldn't be up to beloved crosswords - rising to the challenges set on this site has been great fun and a way of proving the experts wrong! Which should remind folks that life's too short for petty stuff - no one needs to answer - or even read - threads. Also - what's the difference between taking the quiz into work and asking colleagues, and posting them on here? Still 'cheating' ...
Here is my opinion as both a solver of charity quizzes and as a giver of answers on this site.
Everyone has a different level of ability when tackling these quizzes and so what is easier for one, is more challenging to another. People who enter quizzes fall into two categories by my estimation. 1) Those whose only aim is to complete the quiz so they can get their entry in. 2) Those who enjoy the challence and and try to solve as many as possible however long it takes.
Those in group (1) have sometimes posted blocks of 10 questions or so within days of the quiz being published and have thus annoyed those in group (2). This is within the rules of AnswerBank because the site is defined as a question and answer site and it is up to individuals whether they respond or not. Individuals are also free to pass comment so long as they are not offensive.
Charity quizzes are different from crosswords in that one crossword answer can help to solve other answers and members will be more willing to help others along the way. The questions in Charity quizzes are usually in isolation so failing to get one or two answers is no great deal. The Quiz mentioned by bibster (Rainbow Quiz - Money Matters') is a particularly challenging quiz and it irks some people when answers are given away too freely.
However, there are one or two challenging (advanced) crosswords around that solvers also feel very possessive about but if it wasn't for this site openly discussing one of them, Enigma Variations, then crofter, Christiana? & myself wouldn't have got into solving them so this site has been an advantage to us - and hopefully will be to others.

I am unfamiliar with the GB Quiz but have noted the reluctance of members to give answers.

It is interesting reading your reply, gen2. I started solving cryptic crosswords by watching others, then taking a half solved crossword home and attempting to fill in the blanks with a word that fitted, then trying to see how it tied in with the clue. I then checked the answers the next day (pre computers!).
I have seen replies that suggest to the question author that they should try easier crosswords as they're out of their league. On a public site this must be humiliating for the person trying to learn. How do you get better without trying? I'd rather admire their efforts and help them than shoot them down in flames. Which is what you're saying I guess, except for your seemingly tacit acceptance about some crosswords. This is what I mean about the etiquette being confusing!

I don't know where you get that info from.
Quizmail is run by Vic and Dave Steadman since 1991 from their publishing business in Hitchin Herts and was going long before Answerbank was ever even thought of. It's certainly not set by anyone on here .
