What is going to happenin 2012 (appart from the Olympics)?

I have recently read that in the year 2012, (according to Mayan prophecies and other prophetics) that there will be an event of possible solar activity producing a 'Polar flip'. This will cause the earth's crust to shift and will cause worldwide destruction and change to continents. Apparently it has happened before, the ancient civilization of Atlantis being a notable result of this cycle.

There seems much written about the fact that something is going to happen, of big proportion, in 2012 (apart from the Olympics, which happens to be in that year). Wondered if anyone else has read any of these articles?

Some say the world will end, others say a new era of peace will begin, and there are some who are expecting the ancient gods to return to the earth. If you type Mayan Prohecy 2012 into google, you'll get lots of information.

I honestly believe before 2012 there will be a neclear war and half the world destroyed. Once Bush invades Iran, then a neclear war is almost certain. Maybe that's when peace will come.

I read an article about an asteroid which is hurtling our way and due to hit us in 2014.
Lots of scientist saying it will hit us, lots saying it wont.
But they all agree that if it does, it has the potential for a complete wipe out of all life.

As far as I understand it the Mayan calender goes in cycles and the next cycle ends on 23rd December 2012. This doesn't mean the end of the world, just a new cycle. Just like the prophesied millenium bug that was going to hit when our calender changed to 2000, it is probably a non event!

Its all very spooky isn't it (hopefully not the return of Mrs. T !!)but I think its more likely to be something to do with the planet in some way whether it be severe weather or the earths crust, war, or something will happen that will change peoples minds about how they look at things in the future causing a big shift in consciousness. Oh how I hate secrets, I want to know now!!!

It is important to define what the Galactic Alignment is in precise astronomical terms. (See the Glossary below for terms.)

The Galactic Alignment is the alignment of the December solstice sun with the Galactic equator. This alignment occurs as a result of the precession of the equinoxes.

Precession is caused by the earth wobbling very slowly on its axis and shifts the position of the equinoxes and solstices one degree every 71.5 years. Because the sun is one-half of a degree wide, it will take the December solstice sun 36 years to precess through the Galactic equator (see diagram below).

The precise alignment of the solstice point (the precise center-point of the body of the sun as viewed from earth) with the Galactic equator was calculated to occur in 1998 (Jean Meeus, Mathematical Astronomy Morsels, 1997).

Thus, the Galactic Alignment "zone" is 1998 +/- 18 years = 1980 - 2016. This is "era-2012."

This Galactic Alignment occurs only once every 26,000 years, and was what the ancient Maya were pointing to with the 2012 end-date of their Long Count calendar.

To clarify, the Galactic equator or Dark rift has emense gravitational influence it is like a huge disc with the centre being the centre of the Milky way (our galaxy that we sit on the edge of) and will affect the Sun's solar activity, which may be strong enough to cause solar flares and radiation bursts to earth. These could be as strong as to wipe out all computer chips and power grids, or stronger frying everyone with Gamma radiation (there was an event from solar flare in 96 i think that wiped out North Americas power for days). There could ofcourse also be rapid pole shift which could cause a great flood or eartquakes and 300/400mph winds etc... But the truth is no one knows and for an event that happens every 25,000 years it didnt wipe us all out last time so why will it this time.

This date 21st Dec 2012 is when earth is exactly mid way through the dark rift/ galactic equator, we are already moving through it so between now and 2015 when we finally pass below it some thing or nothing could happen.

My plan is to keep tuned to the news, be prepared with a bag of food,blankets, sleeping bags, camping stove, torch, first aid kit, wind up radio, tea/cofee etc and to be ready to get to a high point i.e 200meters above sea level and above if there are reports of oceanic earthquakes or tidal waves. Cant hurt to be prepared just in case!.

In the mean time put it aside in your mind and live your life as you would as it could all be a load of ballonie and wont have the slightest effect!!
