never cast a clout till May is out. I know it is not to do with clothes, but the the flowering of a tree but can't remember which tree, can any body help thanks

The May blossom comes from the Hawthorn Tree, so do not take off (cast) warm clothes (clout) till May (hawthorn blossom) is out (has flowered)
All my life I have thought that May referred to the month.
Anyone else the same?
