17a I think is HEED with AT inthe middle (i.e. heart ), giving heated

dinkypuzzled thanks for shaded and seethed - I had gathered the latter but not the first - but if SEETHED does not that mean that 18d begins with an E it so would exclude DEPENDED, maybe it is EXPENSED but I dont like it ?
