There are no phonetic symbols that represent anything other than the English aplhabet. It used, primarily to make radio communication more clear since many alphabetic letters sound quite alike...B, D, G... to name a few... those examples become Bravo, Delta and Gulf...

... And thanks for that catch, heathfield (which is translated from the Greek via the Latin for 'ever vigilant') and yes, when spoken here, Golf (correct phonetic symbol for "G") is usally pronouced "Gulf", just as Quebec (for Q) is usually exaggerated to "Kay-beck"...
