I think the etesian is a sort of sirocco that blows seasonally (though not in Cannes or Nice afaik)
19a Ete-sian - Ete (Fr for 'summer') + 1st letters, s(ight) i(s) a(lways) n(ice) - of a recurring NW Med wind

Thanks to you both, especially Lie-in King. I just wasn't breaking the words down far enough. I knew that the etesian was another name for the meltemi, which is Greek, but again too far east.
ete is French for summer
etesian means something that happens annually
I have already enteerd litre but can't fully understand why.
Meanwhile I have only one to do, that is 36 down. I have letters -o-t-d-l-r for the question about Kurt , swine and dog and haven't a clue. Any ideas?
