EV 856 Area of Doubt

Hello EV Wine Clubbers,
Jaques had me "doubting" for a while if I'd complete EV 856!
After the initial quest for gifts, and no chance of even starting to populate the grid, I resolved the last clue of Momentum and took a leap of faith as to where it would be entered. Everything then fell into place, more or less!!
Needless to say EV as always has relevance strewn all over the title and in this instance the names of the types of clues!
Copelander, it looks as if I hadn't lost all my lives after all, have you ever used the right hand column?

Hi DocHH!

I was very fortunate. I managed to get a lot of the momentums quite quickly and also had 8a and 1d from "positions". The second momentum answer seemed to fit with 8a which, in turn, gave the correct entry for 1d. and after that it was relatively plain sailing.
I think the completed grid is one for Physicsgirl!!
Australian red is on the agenda today.

two of my least favorite things to do in a puzzle - scrambled (well sort of) answers and "guess where they fit" answers. I got needlessly hung up on 1a (I still think my answer is better) but figured since none of the down clues worked I had better rethink it. Just need to find the 31-letter hidden "area of doubt" but will save that for after lunch.

When I was gainfully employed I'd regularly go across La Manche for meetings, and always by car! M Pidou near Calais was a good source of wine, some ordinaire and others a bit special. Always filled the boot, just to ensure there were no illegal immigrants in there
I have some 1980 St Estephe, Chateaux Lafitte, plus a few 1979 Saint Emillion, even a 1979 Rioja, and some Arthur Daleys Jeffry Chambertins! . At times there were at least 200 bottles in the garage and at least another 50 in racks in the kitchen!! Rather depleted now though. I probably will not be able to start the thread next week, due to family pressures to be elsewhere, without internet access, plus being sociable!! Any chance of you or perhaps drb, starting the thread at about 16.00 UK time!!

Good evening N & Cers, hope you are all well. Have only just begun and the relevence of the types of clue is currently totally lost on me, although I have done reasonably well on both sections so far, am I to conclude that the title refers to some horribly scientific physics sort of thing that (for someone who has great dificulty in comprehending why algebraic X is X) will cause my eyes to glaze uncomprehendingly?
Went out for W/A dinner last night (were playing Mah Jong with friends the week before) and had a very nice bottle of NZ sauvignon blanc., one of my favourites. Saving the last 1970 Port for the biggy next year

Yes Devadolly, something of a Physics nature lurks in the final grid. I've just read a short but interesting item in Chambers Biographical Dictionary which makes the relevance of the two types of clue very clear.

Chambers Biographical Dictionary is a superb book and covers people from many walks of life and from many different generations. It's very useful for dipping into for what people may have painted, composed etc. The item on our physicist in question mentions momemntum and direction.

I suspect you will have detected that all of us present so far are fine, and ready with corkscrew or prepared to unscrew a metal top!! Don't even worry about the "doubt" until the grid is complete. I ignored it completely until populating the grid fully. It then jumped out!
In actual fact "herself", who is also totally non-scientific had heard of the 31 squares that had to be highlighted, but had no understanding of what it was about!
By the way x=37y and y=4.6z+v, joke!!

Novalis - of course I have got a CBD and yes, it is almost as interesting as the Dictionary itself, it is just where to look, as to Physicists, E is the only initial that springs to mind! As to the wine - my sentiments entirely!
DocHH - don't make jokes like that, they will cause me to take to my bed with apoplexy. It's not one of those complicated magic square things is it? Ugggghh!
