As the years went by, my Civil Service ('Mafia') career covered a variety of tasks; all based in London. So I became a seasoned traveller on the Underground (Tube) or from where I live (the Overground). (I am beginning to sound like a Womble!) Eventually, I built up experience with such topics as Finance, Contracts, Sales, Document and Building Security: giving me a wide spread of duties. I suppose these skills gave me a good grounding for my future 'Don' career of Extortion, Contract Killings, Profiteering, etc, etc, etc.
Seriously though, I really did change positions every 3 or4 years and consequently made numerous friends. On the social aspects of my life, Sport has always played an important part (and still does). I played football until age 36 and cricket until age 57, when Father Time caught up with me. Nowadays, I umpire regularly in Essex for adult and junior games. I get more pleasure from seeing the younger players participate, as they are the future of the game.
