MM Links October 2009 [Week 4]

Hello again from Queen Christiana, the Cheerful One. To continue the ‘saga’; in due course, along came husband, three sons and an obstinate English bull terrier called Basher. That was in the days when, with the coming of children, women often gave up work and, though cash was short, I was no exception. This continued for six happy years. As Her Cheerfulness, I choose to draw a veil over the 18 months that followed. Suffice it to say that illness struck and, less than 8 years after marriage, I found myself a widow with three small children.
What to do? Eventually I realised teaching would enable me to earn enough to support my family and to be around in the school holidays. So exactly a year after the death of my husband, Tom, I found myself attending Coloma College in Kent. To my surprise, like many mature students, I discovered I had an aptitude for it. For four years I studied, wrote essays, prepared for tests, attended classes, talked, argued, and lived on a student grant, which was something of a struggle. At the end of year three I had my teaching certificate, but decided to stay on a further year to complete an English degree.

So one day in early July, off the boys and I went to a beautiful Island which was to be my home for the next fourteen years. All I knew about Mona’s Isle (as the locals affectionately call it) was that it was “warmed by the Gulf Stream”, a geographical fact for which there is little physical evidence. Only 32 miles long by 14 miles wide, it has amazing variety – secluded bays, tranquil glens, rolling hills and even a mountain in the middle. There are horse trams, electric trams and a steam railway. It’s gorgeous, but a tropical paradise it aint. Two of my sons still live there.
Now, turning to the MM Links, I shall, as usual, follow the rules relating the word length as introduced by crofter. Each of my chosen link words contains at least four letters and at most eight. Stray outside this range and you will be wasting one or more of your attempts! Each of my selected words may go in front of or after my challenge word. The competition will officially close at 7.00pm on Sunday evening when my selected words will be declared, and points awarded in the usual manner. My fourth set of words to be linked should appear below at 9.00am.
