MM Links Solutions December 2009 [Week 2]

Well, Princess Di (aka grannydi) must truly be renamed “Diana the Bountiful” as she was able to produce the most profitable game ever in the history of MM Linking. Over 50 points were picked up by 25 of the 38 entrants. Using the theme of ‘Dentistry’, Princess Di chose the following link words:

PLASTIC Surgery
Tooth FAIRY
Drill SERGEANT
Filling STATION

Quite a mixed bag of imaginative links, which appealed to many of the contestants.

Strix was first to enter and he drew blood with PLASTIC SURGERY and FILLING STATION for FOUR POINTS! Surprisingly, every one of the first dozen entrants found their way to the scoreboard ~ either with Four Points following the lead of Strix ~ or indeed Entrant #2, fordward, with TOOTH FAIRY and FILLING STATION (another FOUR POINTER). In fact, these two were matched scorewise by roslyn251254 (who must be approaching her 55th birthday). This is the one disadvantage of building in your date of birth into a username!

Around this time, there came a string of Two-Point scorers in the shape of Christiana, Aquagility, beejay1124, slaney & Dustybun. The only missing link was DRILL SERGEANT, who appeared in the form of tearinghair as Entrant #9 (with Filling Station to boot) for yet another FOUR POINTS! By shear coincidence, there immediately followed four more Drill Sergeants perfectly in step (x-ray, Dinkypuzzled, jan1956 & cliffyg), each picking up TWO POINTS. The last one in this list had previously called at the Filling Station ~ so cliffyg was another Four Pointer!

In fact the first person NOT to score was Entrant #13 (!) ~ namely newcomer & future champion, caslass (no need to guess where she hails from), to whom I say ‘Nil Desperandum’. There followed several entrants picking up a single point and noticeably both partners in Jim & Jools ~ and Chris & Shazza shared two-point totals (if that makes sense).

For honourable mention in despatches, I pick out miss meg & deecee131 (for two double late Hits). However, special mention is made of ex-champion lysander, who entered the contest late on and registered THREE HITS (for three points). Although there were several players scoring more points, I have no hesitation in naming lysander as “Hot Shot of the Week”!

*** Let crowds go wild and yell “Encore!” ***

Two or three players have been able to put together a run of two weeks of very good scores!

EIGHT POINTS: cliffyg & Strix
SIX POINTS: tearinghair
FOUR POINTS: beejay, Dinkypuzzled, fordward, miss meg & roslyn
THREE POINTS: lysander
Eleven others are on Two Points and another eleven are on One Point!

Congratulations to grannydi for a very successful launch (in many respects)! Don’t worry that you’ve been probed by both cliffyg and Strix (over both weeks). These two are MM ex-champions and well skilled in lateral thinking. I doubt if they’ll be able to keep this pace up for very much longer!

Was she so sophisticated she never visited the depths of the Lower Bun Room at the Students Union or did she, ever, visit the panelled sophistication (hmm) of the Cochrane Lounge?

Oh, Strix, you are a hoot! I heard the Cochrane Lounge was a strip joint ~ "Wednesday - Get Your Kit Off" ~ so what would our Princess Di be doing there?

No surprises for us. Nil desperandum indeed. One of these weeks you will run out of champions and then it will be time to give the Boobie Prize winners a chance. I wonder how that would work out?
