Working with animals

I always wanted to be a vet when I was younger, but I couldn't get my head round physics and kind of gave up on the whole thing. I ended up drifting career wise and have been doing the same job (which was just something I stumbled into) for nearly 20 years. Anyway, I've been thinking about my original career choice and although I know I can't be a vet I'd still like to work with animals. I've looked a little into vet nursing and the like, but does anyone have any ideas of jobs I could do working with animals and how I could get into them (bearing in mind that I need a salary and I have a family so I can't up sticks)? Thanks
Karen
