Just bought milk in village cost £1.03. Gave assistant £5 with 10p to help with the change. She rang it up as £1.03 with £5 tendered and started to get £3.97 change. I pointed out the 10p still on the counter and she "Oh yeah......erm............what's that then.........erm...............erm...........
I
think it might be £4.07, but to be safe I'll ring it up again"

Many a time on our local market stall, they would use a scrap of paper to add up 2 items and Im stood there with the right money in my hand waiting for them. I dont think many people can add or subtract without a calculator these days, young or old. Im not brainy but I can at least do the basic things (and more if I put my mind to it) which is half the problem, some dont want to have to use their brains. I think keeping those little grey cells working as long as possible is the best thing
I do it all the time, total = £15.66 I tender £20 and 16p, very often it is pushed back with the reply, it's ok we have plenty change!! Yes but I don't want a purse full of shrapnel thankyou.
I recently bought £35 worth of petrol and gave the assistant two twenty pound notes. Don't know what buttons she hit but the change due was £435, "I don't think that's right" she said" how much should it be ?"

I think where I notice the difference the most is in bar work. Years ago when i used to work in various pubs, you had to add the drinks up in your head - you very quickly became pretty good at mental arithmetic. Now they have sooper dooper electronic tills that work everything out for them!
gizzards are tuppence hapenny a pound and I will have a pound and three quarters please LOL
i'm quite well educated with a levels and degrees and stuff, and sometimes i get fuddled with adding, subtraction and spelling the simplest words. mind blank hits when you least expect it, its why we scream at the tv when someone on a quiz show stumbles over a simple q.

give em a break.
I drew some money out over the bank counter;
She : How much would you like ?
Me : £ 50
She : How would you like it ?
Me : Two £20s and two £10s, thanks...............

And I got it !!!
As her job would possibly have been on the line, I returned the extra £10.........
jack...thats the sort of twisted thing I would do...
