TITLE OF POSTING

Once again, this is “King John” (aka rockfordill) bidding you Welcome to my second week. You took me by surprise last week when you more or less took me apart and left me drained of points. I must try harder (as my school report often read!).

Talking of schools, between the 1930s and 1950s I was fortunate to go to an excellent prep school – which meant Latin and French from the tender age of 8. Thereafter, it was on to Grammar School, which went by the quaint title of “The Old Philological School”. Eventually, it was renamed Marylebone Grammar and lists among its celebrated Old Boys Jerome K Jerome (among others).

Although I enjoyed mathematics, my first love was always languages and I followed the Classics route through Latin and Greek, etc. I suppose I was being a romantic even at that young age, with scant regard for whatever skills would prove useful to me later in life (when I had to earn living). Nevertheless, who could NOT be inspired by the romance of those star-crossed lovers, Paris and Helen of Troy. What an epithet: “The face that launched a thousand ships” leading to an epic battle that was only resolved by horseplay. Even today, we are warned “Beware of Greeks bearing gifts”.

As for this morning, beware of MM Link Setters bearing points! Regarding the every-day running of MM, I shall follow the usual rule on word length. Each of my chosen link words contains at least four letters and at most eight. Stray outside this range and you will be wasting one of your attempts! Each of my selected words may go in front of or after my challenge word. The competition will officially close at 7.00pm on Sunday evening when crofter will declare my selected words, then apply the same rules for awarding points that have been applied during all MM Link Games in the past. This second set of four words to have their links predicted will appear below at 9.00am.
Well it's all Greek to me!
