I'm curious why K always gives a link. Puzzlers need only bookmark the 'The Spectator SmartEdition' website and wait until the new edition is published each week. The usually helpful 'Crossword Buddy' was caught out by a word or two this week...

@toalisi: No, I don't think there is anything wrong in 1976.

Re. "butanes" in 1973: Is "butane" really a countable noun? I would have thought not. What do other ABers (chemists especially) think?

I too could not see anything wrong with the crossword which was straightforward.

I'm not sure what Bootlebarth's 'crossword buddy' refers to and maybe he will explain it to us?

Reply to K. 'Crossword Buddy' is on www.loquax.co.uk. It's one of many free sites that gives words fitting a sequence of known and unknown letters. Much faster than thumbing through a dictionary. It has lots of words absent from Chambers but also lacks some therein, such as 38a and 34d.
