Where does the superstition of Crossing on the stairs being unlucky originate ? People cross in the stairs in department stores or schools etc all the time, yet most people wont generally.

It goes back to the days when people carried swords. If you passed someone on the stairs, they could easily turn round and stab you.

Anyone who refuses to cross on stairs now must be slightly mad.
