I have a strange insight into this question, about fifteen years ago i was involved with a high risk security company. as part of this job i had to make a security review for three columbian "business" men and their family, massive as it was.in Cartagena, Columbia their trade was an obvious one and during a drunken hotel conversation with my "minder" (he used to drive me everywhere and stop me going into bad neighbourhoods etc) he explained that the leaves were picked and then rolled to extract the juice then a solvent takes out the remaining esscence which is strained and the cocaine extracted by hydrochloric acid plus other things. it is then dried out on shallow trays until it crystalises. then it is ground into a powder and bagged(after being adulterated with god knows what to double its bulk). i would agree with you for not starting a business these people were true animals, in my jobs, i have spent time with some very unsavoury people but i have got to say that these chaps along with their women were the worst i had met.I have met bandits in west africa that did what they did just to survive, they were still peasants, these people were greedy and very violent.
