The concept has been discussed recently around child benefit cuts for the "well-off". Child benefit might only extend to the first two children, for example.
Would you condemn Old Mother Hubbard to a life of want, clothes from charity shops, and no plasma television?
... don't think you'd get a decent sized plasma tv in a cupboard

Let's be honest, why should whose of us who contribute via Tax, NI, etc have to pay to support the breeding habits of the feckless?
If you can't afford to support children, don't have them!
Well I voted no because it just says benefits.

I think benefits shouldn't be paid to people who get pregnant while claiming them already.

It's not fair to cap benefits for families who had more than two children whilst in work and then fell on hard times.
I agree with Baldric. If you can't afford to support children, don't have them!

Can you add another option, Ed? 'Should child benefit be stopped entirely'.
Many people have children when they can afford them. It's very hard to predict the future though.
If people fall on hard times in the future, that's a different matter entirely. We shouldn't be handing out money automatically in the here and now just for having children.
Like I said...benefits should not be paid for children conceived and born while the parents are claiming benefits.

It's obvious. Have a big family if you want, but don't expect other people to pay for it.

Does that sentiment also extend to those in the Third World or just against your own countrymen?

If someone with children falls on hard times through no fault of their own, there should be temporary help available, which of course there is.
My objection is to those already on benefits awarding themselves an annual pay rise by producing another child, which is the only thing a lot of them appear qualified to do!
Wiki have a section on child benefit. Shows some systems in other countries, and sets the context for the system in the UK

Based on those figures, the irish system looks pretty generous...

I do not have a problem with capping CB payments based on the number of children. It was not uncommon to make use of the hand me down principle in larger families. Does not do any harm. People really should be taking cognizance of the cost implications of having a large number of children.

AOG, I've reread the OP, unless I'm missing something the Ed did not include the Third World in the Question, so if it's worrying you I would respectfully suggest youstart your own thread on the subject.

//If you can't afford to support children, don't have them! //

Yes and don't you dare get made redundant after having children either!

Seriously did IQ's just fall around here?
Jake, //Yes and don't you dare get made redundant after having children either!

Apparently so. Yours!

I've already said //If people fall on hard times in the future, that's a different matter entirely.//
As has been said above jake, if people fall on hard times AFTER having kids, that's a different matter. We'd all expect the welfare state to do it's job as a safety net.
My sister had one child, then twins. Difficult to plan for that. She's not on benefits though.

Jake see my post at 12:21, You really need to read threads before trying to be superior!
